For all of you who are sick of eating take out at home and/or cooking, it’s time to celebrate, because Michigan restaurants are now open for indoor dining! But before you head out to your favorite restaurant, keep in mind that there are regulations put in place by Governor Gretchen Whitmer to reduce the spread of Covid-19 as much as possible. According to Michigan.gov, indoor dining in groups of up to 6 people is allowed, and the indoor capacity cannot exceed 25%.  There is also a 10:00 PM curfew set in place, and of course,  masks and social distancing are required. As long as you follow these guidelines, you are good to go! Grab your mask, hand sanitizer, and wallet, and get out there and support local Michigan restaurants! Happy indoor dining, everybody! Cheers to no dishes tonight!

Connecting during Covid

12/4/2020 (Permalink)

blonde woman wearing glasses talking on phone A simple phone call goes a long way when you can't meet in person!

Creating meaningful relationships, and maintaining open communication with insurance agents and adjusters is extremely important in the restoration business. Insurance agents and adjusters can provide us with helpful information that the customer might not know or be aware of! Agents and adjusters are also great referral sources, and can connect us with customers who need our assistance! To show our appreciation for our local agents and adjusters, we like to treat them each month to a little something special. Sometimes that means taking them out for drinks, participating in golf outings, or dropping off treats and goodies to let them know we care!

However, our monthly treats and visits are looking a little different lately due to the Coronavirus. With many of our local agents and adjusters working from home, we’ve had to get creative with how we connect people! This year has been hard on everyone, so now more than ever it’s important to let people know you appreciate them. If you can’t connect with your agents or adjusters in person, a simple phone call goes a long way. Taking the time to call someone on the phone just to check in shows that you care and that you haven’t forgotten about them. Other ways we are supporting our agents and adjusters is by sending gift baskets made by local businesses. If a gift basket isn’t in the budget, a simple thinking of you card sent in the mail is a great way to let your agents and adjusters know you care! Other ways to support your agents and adjusters is to like, follow, and recommend their business pages on social media. We know these ideas aren’t a replacement for connecting face to face, but it’s a great way to maintain your relationships until you can safely meet again in person!

President's Day!

In honor of President’s Day, consider the following quote from Martin Van Buren, who was the 8th president of the United States.

“It is easier to do a job right than to explain why you didn't.”

One of the reasons this quote is so popular is because it’s applicable to all areas of life! You can apply it to your job, raising your kids, your marriage, school, or a project.

At SERVPRO of North East Grand Rapids, we apply this quote to every single job, every single day. We understand that your home and business are important to you, and we take pride in our ability to do the job right!. No matter the situation, SERVPRO of North East Grand Rapids is ready to respond ASAP! Our professional crews are expertly trained, and have years of experience enabling them to do the job right!

Use your ceiling fan to keep warm this winter!

12/24/2019 (Permalink)

ceiling fan Gently running your fan clockwise can help your home stay warm this winter!

An easy way to save money on heat this winter is by using your ceiling fan! Running your ceiling fan on low in a clock wise direction circulates warm air into your home or business. Since heat rises, the air by the ceiling is warmer than the air by the floor. According to todayshowhomeowner.com, “The reason the fan is set to rotate clockwise on low is to keep from creating a strong draft, which would cool you down just like it does in summer. Instead, the air near the ceiling is pushed up and outward, causing it to circulate down near the perimeter of the room. Since the air at floor level is warmer, the thermostat can be set lower, saving money and helping the environment at the same time. Any heat generated by the fan’s motor is a bonus in the winter, so you can keep it running whether you are present in the room or not.”

SERVPRO employees visiting animal shelter SERVPRO had the BEST time visiting Bellwether Harbor animal shelter!

Recently, SERVPRO had an incredible opportunity to visit two wonderful animal shelters and drop off donations. One of SERVPRO’s favorite activities is connecting with the local community.  Everyone in our office loves animals, so we were excited to meet a need and visit these awesome shelters! The staff at both shelters were great! They gave us tours, provided us with helpful information, and let us play with the animals! It was great to see people in our community working hard to make a difference for abandoned, neglected, and abused animals. It was difficult to leave the shelters at the end of the day, but we left knowing our donations were given to two amazing facilities! A big thank you to Caitlyn from the Kent County Humane society, and Carmen from Bellwether harbor! Your dedication to helping animals has not gone unnoticed!

Rockford Santa parade!

Decorated SERVPRO truck Our box truck is ready for the Holidays!

Here at SERVPRO, we love getting to know our local community! One of our favorite ways to get involved is through the Rockford Michigan Santa Parade! Every year in December, Rockford puts on a festive parade to celebrate the holidays, and we love being a part of it! A few Saturdays ago, SERVPRO employees along with their families met up for a quick breakfast before the parade. We carpooled to Rockford, and decorated a SERVPRO box truck with blinking lights and a pretty wreath. Despite the cold, everyone loved passing out candy and packets of hot chocolate to the kids watching the parade. It was a fun way to connect with our community, and say hi to those who have supported us! Can’t wait until next year!

Call SERVPRO the first signs of Mold

12/27/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can grow on anything

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Prevent an Ice Dam on your Roof this Season

12/26/2018 (Permalink)

Ice build up on a house roof

Every year we deal with an excessive amount of snow and cold temperatures that take a toll on your property. When the snow falls the last thing that you think about are ice dams that form on your home and the damage that they can cause. With some steps of prevention and things to look for you can save a lot of headache and money this winter season.

Things to look for when you suspect you have an ice dam problem:

  • You see icicles forming behind the gutter
  • Ice or water starts to form on the siding or around windows
  • Ice begins to build on top of the gutters or lower edge of roof
  • You see icicles forming on the edge of your roof this can be with or without gutters
  • Ice begins coming through the soffit vents or through the soffit itself.
  • PREVENTING ICE DAMS
  • You can scrape snow from the roof whenever it falls, using a snow rake or a broom or plastic shovel. Keeping the access snow from building up on the edge of the roof.
  • Heated cables are another prevention tip for ice dams. Attached with clips along the roof's edge in a zigzag pattern, heated cables combat ice dams that lift shingles and cause leaks

These simple tips and things to look for will make it easier to know what the next steps are when dealing with water leaks in your home. Plants can do what for my home?

12/24/2018 (Permalink)

There are over 26 different kinds of plants that clean air

Sure, that potted fern is pretty, but can it really spruce up the air quality in your home? Studies by scientists at NASA, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Georgia and other respected institutions suggest that it can.

Plants are notoriously adept at absorbing gases through pores on the surface of their leaves. It's this skill that facilitates photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert light energy and carbon dioxide into chemical energy to fuel growth.

But scientists studying the air-purification capacities of indoor plants have found that plants can absorb many other gases in addition to carbon dioxide, including a long list of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Benzene (found in some plastics, fabrics, pesticides and cigarette smoke) and formaldehyde (found in some cosmetics, dish detergent, fabric softener and carpet cleaner) are examples of common indoor VOCs that plants help eliminate.

These VOCs and other indoor air pollutants (such as ozone) have been linked to numerous acute conditions, including asthma and nausea, as well as chronic diseases such as cancer and respiratory illnesses.

Indoor Plants Help with Removing Harmful Compounds from the Air

An indoor plant's ability to remove these harmful compounds from the air is an example of phytoremediation, which is the use of any plant — indoors or out — to mitigate pollution in air, soil or water.

Indoor plants remove pollutants from the air by absorbing these gases through their leaves and roots. The microorganisms that live in the soil of potted plants also play an instrumental role in neutralizing VOCs and other pollutants.

While most leafy plants are adept at purifying indoor air, some of the plants that scientists have found most useful in removing VOCs include Japanese royal ferns, spider plants, Boston ferns, purple waffle plants, English ivy, areca palms, golden pothos, aloe vera, snake plants and peace lilies.

Staying warm this winter season without disasters

12/18/2018 (Permalink)

Stay warm without worry this year

The winter season is here and with it comes shorter days and lower temperatures. No matter where you live, winter brings a change in the weather. Many people use alternative heat sources like fireplaces, portable space heaters, and wood burning stoves to help keep homes warm. Did you know, heating equipment is a leading cause of home fire deaths? According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment fires cause an estimated $1 billion in direct property damage annually. Keep the following safety tips in mind to help reduce your risk of a heating-related fires in your home the winter season.

  • Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.
  • Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Keep anything flammable at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or a portable space heater. Have a three foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heater
  • Test smoke alarms monthly
  • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.
